Why We Focus on Education

Why Child Education Matters

For many children in Uganda, the chance to attend school is not guaranteed. Financial constraints, lack of supplies, and distance to safe learning environments are just some of the challenges they face. Education is more than just learning—it’s a path to breaking cycles of poverty, empowering individuals, and building a foundation for community resilience and progress. Our Child Education Program is rooted in the belief that every child deserves access to quality education that nurtures their potential and fosters their dreams.

Breaking the Cycle: Addressing the Barriers to Primary Education in Uganda

One of the most significant barriers to education is financial constraints. While education is recognized as a fundamental right, it's a privilege that many families simply cannot afford. Parents are burdened with paying for school fees, uniforms, and supplies—expenses that quickly add up. The average annual school fee of UGX 278,000 (around $75) is unaffordable for most rural families, where many parents earn less than this amount in a month. In urban areas, school costs are even higher, making it nearly impossible for lower-income families to keep their children in school consistently.

The Education Crisis in Uganda: Why Our Children Are Falling Behind

The statistics are eye-opening and deeply concerning. For children of primary school age, 14% are not in school, and 12% of all school-aged children have never set foot in a classroom. Even more troubling is the dropout rate: nearly half of school-aged children (48.2%) have dropped out before completing primary school. When it comes to secondary education, only 28% of children are able to continue their studies, underscoring the stark reality that most Ugandan children lack access to a full education.

In the bustling streets of Kampala, hidden in plain sight, is a silent cry for help. Walking through the markets or waiting at traffic lights, you will see them: children with outstretched hands, their eyes carrying a sadness far too heavy for their years. Some try to make a small living—cleaning windshields, shining shoes, or selling meagre goods—while others roam, waiting for anything that could change their fate.
