Breaking the Cycle: Addressing the Barriers to Primary Education in Uganda

One of the most significant barriers to education is financial constraints. While education is recognized as a fundamental right, it's a privilege that many families simply cannot afford. Parents are burdened with paying for school fees, uniforms, and supplies—expenses that quickly add up. The average annual school fee of UGX 278,000 (around $75) is unaffordable for most rural families, where many parents earn less than this amount in a month. In urban areas, school costs are even higher, making it nearly impossible for lower-income families to keep their children in school consistently.

When it comes to secondary education, only 28% of children are able to continue their studies, underscoring the stark reality that most Ugandan children lack access to a full education.
